What is the purpose of Grandparents and Special Friends Day?

The purpose of Grandparents and Special Friends Day is to foster community relations and boost family involvement in our school. It is a day to recognize the importance of our heritage, our community, and relationships across generations. ACMS would like to create a community that remembers its history as it builds its future.

When does Grandparents and Special Friends day start?

Grandparents and Special Friends day is at ACMS on Friday, September 10, 2010. The day begins at 2:00 pm with registration and light snacks in the auditorium. At 2:15 visitors will meet the Principal and at 2:30 the ACMS drama students will perform. At 2:45 the ACMS Cheerleaders will perform and at 3:00 visitors will go to classrooms with the students to meet their teachers. School is dismissed at 3:45.

Do I need to RSVP?

YES! You can RSVP by sending an email to Please let us know who is coming and what student they will be visiting. You can also send a note to school with the student or mail one to Grandparents/Special Friends Day, 820 Essie Avenue, SE, Atlanta, GA 30316.

Is ACMS handicapped accessible?

The first floor of our school is handicapped accessible. However, since our school is in an older building, there are sections of our school that are not handicapped accessible. Since some of our classrooms are up stairs, please let us know if you cannot climb stairs and we will make arrangements for that class to meet on the first floor.

Who is invited?

Any grandparent or special friend that is identified by a student or parent of a student is sent an invitation. If you would like to add someone to the list please send an email to

What if a student does not have a grandparent that can attend?

If a grandparent cannot attend, we encourage students to ask another relative or special family friend to attend. We would like for every student to have someone special attend but we realize that sometimes this is not possible. Before going to the classrooms to visit students, visitors will be urged to include students in activities who do not have a visitor. We do not want any student to feel left out.

From I20 go south on Moreland Avenue. Take a right on Delaware Avenue. Then, take a right on Essie Ave. The school will be on the right.

Where can I park?

There is plenty of parking on the street around the school. Places where you should not park will be well marked so watch for signs.
