Ms. Laura Byard

Laura Byard is orginally from Minneapolis, Minnesota where she received her BA in Chicano Studies and Spanish & Portuguese Studies and a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Minnesota. Laura studied abroad in Mérida, Venezuela in 2005 and has worked and volunteered in middle schools for five years. Her last two years were spent serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer both in Minnesota and in Georgia with Hands On Atlanta. Last year with AmeriCorps, Laura created and facilitated the Everyday Leaders after school service-learning club (responsible for the mural on Glenwood and Moreland!) and is excited to continue Everyday Leaders this year as a staff member at ACMS. Laura strongly believes language learning should be taught through a cultural lense, especially a language as culturally diverse as Spanish. She has a strong commitment to service and believes that service-learning should be a part of every child's school experience.

When Laura is not at school, she and her new husband (married 8/15/09!) love to read, watch the Twins play baseball, dance swing & tango, hike, travel, bike, play with their cat, and listen to NPR in their apartment in Inman Park.
