Academic Support/Special Education
For students with identified learning disabilities, the special education program at ACMS works with students and families to meet students’ individual needs by accommodating and/or modifying the curriculum. As much as is appropriate, students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 plans are in classes with their peers, and teachers and the special education coordinator work with students in their classes and/or in smaller settings.
Constance Barnes, Academic Support/PEC Coordinator, recently relocated to Atlanta from the New York City area, where she was the Interim Assistant Principal and Dean of Students for a charter middle school. A former University of Alabama student, she holds Master's Degrees in Administration & Supervision as well as Education with a focus on Special Education. She is also the co-founder of a grassroots organization, F.R.E.E., that helps families become advocates for change in the criminal justice system.
Constance has always fostered an appreciation for the arts which is expressed through her interests in literary arts and music. In the late 90s she founded an artist management company to help develop talent in the New York area; she is also a published spoken word artist who patterns her work after the great Nikki Giovanni. She also has avid interest in environmental preservation, health and wellness and the broad umbrella of civil rights as it applies to all people in our nation.
